\b0 Adriano Florensz, son of a carpenter, was born in Utrecht in 1459. He studied at
the University of Louvain where he later became professor, then rector and finally chancellor. In 1507, he was appointed tutor to the young Charles V (1500-1558) for whom he obtained the throne of Spain. Appointed Bishop of Tortosa in 1516, he became Ca
rdinal of Utrecht in 1517 and, in 1522, was elected pope. He believed that his primary tasks were to combat the Protestant Reformation (though he did not understand its full gravity) and to involve all the forces of Christian Europe in a campaign against
the Turks, an operation that almost failed completely. Adrian was very coldly received in Rome. The people were not pleased with the choice of a northern ôbarbarian,ö the Cardinals were disappointed that he did not wish to distribute donations, and the
Curia was not happy at the PopeÆs plans of reformation. So Pope Adrian found himself increasingly isolated in the Apostolic Palace where he died in 1523.\par
